In other words, your documentation of the employment relationship can be the difference between winning and losing an employment lawsuit.

I met with a client last week to review the findings of an assessment that my company performed on its human resources practices.

While reviewing the recommendations, the client, a service provider with 42 employees, asked me a bizarre question: “Why do bicycles need wheels? Why should the rider wear a helmet?”

At least, that is what it sounded like to me; his actual words were, “Why does my company need job descriptions? Why are they so important?”

A recent survey stated that the single biggest challenge business owners face today is acquiring new business. Put another way, the issue is growing topline revenue through the acquisition of new clients.

The question that needs to be asked in order to properly address the challenge is: "What is your plan for getting new business?"

Some owners opt to take the reactive position of sitting and waiting for clients to come to them. That may work for a company with a very strong reputation and longterm market presence.
