Pets are a big priority for families in Santa Clarita, said John Douglas, co-owner of Happy Pets Veterinary Center.

A testament to how much people view their pets as family members, Douglas said, is that none of the veterinary centers locally have closed for economic reasons. Only one or two closed because someone passed away. All of the centers managed to survive and some have even managed to thrive in this economy.

There are small businesses run by families, and then there are large, rapidly growing, double-family, family-run companies.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in September, AMS Fulfillment has grown to some 500 full and part-time employees and is, in part, responsible for the lack of industrial space available in the Santa Clarita Valley. In April, the company opens its 13th warehouse in the Valencia Industrial Center. And it has more than doubled the number of people it employs in the past year.

The National Restaurant Association reports that 30 percent of restaurants fail within the first year. Multiple studies have looked at the internal and external factors that determine if a restaurant is likely to flourish – or fail. Starting up a restaurant is considered a riskier venture than most, and with good reason. Eating and drinking places have the highest failure rate of any retail business in the industry, with more than twice as many failures as furniture stores, car dealerships and apparel stores, a 2005 study by Cornell University found.

The true failure rate has been tough to determine, but the accepted statistic by the National Restaurant Association is that 30 percent of all restaurants fail within the first year of opening.

One-third of all California restaurants are located in Los Angeles County, according to the California Restaurant Association, putting more pressure on existing restaurants than in other areas of the country to compete.

One of the ways restaurants stay healthy is by ensuring an ongoing supply of fresh foods, produce and ingredients to place their meals – and their restaurants – on the “most favored” list of places for patrons to eat.

A law practice is built one case at a time. But a successful law business is built upon victories, reputation and referrals.

When the Santa Clarita-based law firm Owen, Patterson & Owen took on pharmaceutical giant Merck & Company Inc., one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, it became a saga of David and Goliath proportions.

It’s becoming less common for lawyers to do it all, as the law business becomes more and more specialized each year.

Stephen C. Yeazell, a law professor at UCLA, said decades ago the legal field was mostly comprised of general sole practitioners. The legal specialization trend started about 20 to 30 years ago and he sees no reason for the trend to reverse anytime soon, as laws become more and more complex for each area and law schools continue to allow you to specialize your law school education through electives and extracurriculars.

For those of us who did not go into the business of practicing law, we’ve grown up watching dramatic primetime television shows from “Perry Mason” to “L.A. Law.” But the riveting moment, in which a jury or judge pronounces the “Guilty” or “Innocent” verdict, is the culmination of a tremendous amount of time spent doing research, taking depositions and in discovery. A Nielsen survey published in November 2011 showed that 43 percent of all U.S. mobile phone subscribers own a smartphone with a powerful operating system. While that’s not quite yet a majority, the numbers are a powerful reminder of how quickly the technology landscape is changing.
