The city of Santa Clarita celebrates its 25th anniversary at the end of this year. In just a quarter century, it is remarkable to see the growth and progress in the community as a whole, but especially in the business community.

Back in 1987, Santa Clarita had a reputation as the suburb near Six Flags Magic Mountain. “Business” as an identifier and the companies that do business here did not resonate with the Los Angeles market. Today, Santa Clarita is often referred to as “one of Los Angeles County’s best places in which to do business,” offering companies such as Six Flags, Princess Cruises, Boston Scientific, and Advanced Bionics, among 6,000 others — a supportive business environment with a high quality of life.
What makes Santa Clarita such a great place to base a business are things such as the stable local economy, diverse housing options, educated workforce, excellent schools, close proximity to major business centers, and high quality of life.

For DME Direct CEO Andrew Everett, starting a business in Santa Clarita made sense as he and his wife Gloria already lived in the area.

“When we started the company ten years ago, we were already living in Santa Clarita and enjoying it,” Andrew said. “As an internet-based company that distributes to 26 different countries, Santa Clarita’s close proximity to Los Angeles for shipping capabilities and competitive warehouse pricing made it a great choice.”

While many of the area’s business owners were residents first, building a strong business base in Santa Clarita did not happen by accident. In fact, building and supporting a strong business community was a large factor in establishing cityhood. And today, Santa Clarita’s successes are the result of the hard work and vision of public and private sector leaders and a host of programs and tools that make doing business in Santa Clarita better than in other parts of California.

Tools and Programs to Assist with Starting a Business

The City of Santa Clarita has long believed in the power of sharing information with company owners and streamlining processes to make doing business as easy as possible for entrepreneurs.

That’s why the city developed its “Guide to Opening a Small Business in Santa Clarita,” which walks new Santa Clarita business owners through the entire permitting process. The book is available online at Santa-Clarita.com and at City Hall, and includes step-by-step procedures to help eliminate some of the frustration that comes from navigating the business startup process.

The city also restructured its permitting process in 2010, opening a “One Stop Permit Center” on the first floor of City Hall. The One Stop brings together community development, planning and building and safety in one convenient location, which ensures quick, convenient service. The city’s permitting process also went electronic in 2010, allowing permits and plans to be submitted and reviewed online through ePermits and ePlans.

Santa Clarita also boasts a number of business partners committed to helping companies succeed. The Small Business Development Center at College of the Canyons’ University Center offers: business plan consulting; access to business, marketing and financing experts; resources for business financing; and much more. The SBDC is conveniently located just down the hall from the Santa Clarita WorkSource Center, which offers business owners access to a variety of job seekers and interview facilities to assist with growth and expansion.

The Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation, which is also based at College of the Canyons, is dedicated to attracting new businesses to the area and building upon the area’s targeted industry sectors. The entertainment industry, manufacturing, biomedical, and technology already have a strong base of companies in Santa Clarita, but the SCVEDC is working to relocate industry leaders and support companies in these business sectors to the area.

Programs to Help Business Owners

Santa Clarita offers a variety of programs to help business owners retain more of their profits so that reinvestment in their company is possible. Programs such as the Santa Clarita Valley Enterprise Zone, which has saved local companies more than $178 million, the Use Tax Incentive, and the 10 percent local preference for Santa Clarita businesses (which specifies that if a local company is within 10 percent of a low bid on a project but is not the low bidder, the local business has the opportunity to match the low bid price and win the bid) make doing business in Santa Clarita more advantageous than in other parts of the state.

On a quarterly basis the city hosts workshops to explain these incentive programs and walk company owners through the process of accessing program benefits. These workshops are free and open to business owners with companies of all sizes.
