"Green" has, in many ways, become the buzz word of the times. At one time, the word was most commonly associated with a rich emerald color, money or a command: Go! As is so common in our vernacular, the word "green" has taken on a new identity; it now evokes a passion for our planet.
Most of us contribute in varying levels to becoming eco-friendly, either by recycling at home or purchasing recycled products; and for most of us, it gives us some sense of satisfaction that we are doing our part to help the environment.
However, in the office, even the most diligent home recyclers can be caught with an empty soda can in the under-the-desk trash bin.
Developing green initiatives in the workplace can be fairly simple and low-cost to implement. A February 2008 report from Brockmann & Company shows businesses that foster a green philosophy such as "recycling in the office, reducing energy consumption in the office and use video conferencing or tele-presence technologies intensively, have higher customer satisfaction, higher employee satisfaction and higher revenues per employee." These findings suggest that employees who are encouraged to do their part for the environment are happier – and happy employees are productive employees.
Doing your part at home — recycling cans and turning off the water while brushing your teeth — can and does make a difference. However, you can't check your "green conscience" at the office door. If you are ready to start, here are eight low-cost ways to lessen your impact on the planet and create a healthier, more eco-friendly work environment.
Create a Green Culture: Being green at work is most effective if the concept is encouraged and supported at the top and integrated throughout the culture. Assign a Green team leader who is interested in spearheading the program. Create a green motto or tagline and post it on the employee bulletin boards. Attach notices containing recycling and green ideas to employee paycheck statements and educate your employees regarding the recycling program. If you want to step it up a notch, create a competition among departments and throw a lunch for the group that keeps the paper count the lowest or that is able to reduce waste by the largest percentage.
Recyclable Containers: Order recycling containers that identify different types of waste, such as plastics, aluminum and paper. Place the containers in areas that are frequented by employees. Making containers accessible will keep the programs successful and less disruptive to your workflow.
Recycle Printer Cartridges: Place a box or bin near all printers for the collection of used printer cartridges. Better yet, ask employees to bring used cartridges from home for recycling as well – use the proceeds from the cartridges as a donation to an earth-friendly charity.
Recycle Paper: Contract with a vendor to provide paper shredding containers for your office; store the container near the main office copier. Most commercial shredding and document storage companies will provide a container and pick-up at little to no cost to the employer. Recycled cardboard containers are available as well.
Low-Wattage Bulbs: Replace light bulbs where possible with energy efficient bulbs. They use less electricity and last longer than standard light bulbs. Look around the office and identify areas where lighting can be reduced. If you have a fluorescent lighting fixture with three bulbs, remove or loosen one of the bulbs to reduce the amount of energy being used. Remind employees to turn lights off in unoccupied offices and meeting rooms. Consider installing motion sensors that automatically turn the lights off when the space is vacant.
Ride-Share Programs: Consider sponsoring a ride-share program to reduce the amount of fuel being used to commute to and from work. Encourage employees to participate by subsidizing the costs or providing ride-share priority parking.
Time Off to Volunteer: Offer a day off to volunteer for an earth activity in the community. Consider sponsoring such an event as a company and rally employees to get involved.

Most often, business are concerned with profits (linking green to the color of money). However, being green is now a call for businesses to take on environmentally aware programs and processes. Whether you are considering large changes, such as recycled rain water or solar heating, or you just want to cut down on paper usage, every company can take a green stance.
