At this point I couldn’t speak. All I could think was, “What planet is this guy living on?” and “Would someone please grab his shoulders and pull his head out of the sand?”
As fate would have it, later that same day I talked with a friend of mine who owns a film studio in Southern California. I asked him how things were going with the business and what he has done in response to the poor economic policies and regulatory problems in California. His response? He’s expanding to Boston, New York and New Orleans. He could not beat “runaway production,” so he has tried to find a way to embrace it, make money and create jobs for people outside California.
Some may have also read how the State Legislature just cut the extension of the only California film tax credit from five years to one year. As anyone who is involved in film production knows, planning for films does not happen in one year, but many years. A one-year extension of this program sends the wrong signal to Hollywood and essentially neuters the program.
Note to Lockyer: Here’s an idea. Work with the legislature to pass regulatory relief and economic incentives to keep film production in California. Although Lockyer doesn’t believe state government can do much to help the economy, here’s one historically California industry that’s fleeing this state faster than Obama’s falling poll numbers.
