VIA looks back on 30 years

The Valley Industry Association began 2011 like most years, with a focus on its strategic vision, a robust planning calendar and an engaged Board of Directors and staff ready to fulfill the organization’s mission. What made this year different than most was that VIA had an occasion to celebrate – its 30th year connecting and building Santa Clarita Valley business and industry.

As the year comes to a close, VIA takes a look back over three decades if historical milestones and influential people responsible for the success of the organization.

Historical Milestones

In 1981, a group of approximately 20 companies in the Valencia Industrial Center banded together to advocate for transportation improvements in the center. At that time, only a single road led in and out of the center. During any emergency situation, Industrial Center employees were virtually trapped in the park and the road was reserved for emergency vehicles only.

This group worked for change and an extension of Avenue Scott was built, offering Industrial Park residents and employees a secondary route for ingress and egress. Following that success, the Valencia Manufacturers Association was created.

Soon thereafter, the group worked to get daycare facilities within the Industrial Center when it was clear there was a need.

Eventually the non-profit 501(c)6 corporation changed its name to the Valencia Industrial Association. In 2004, it changed to the Valley Industrial Association of Santa Clarita to align the organization more directly with the needs of the industrial communities valleywide. Finally, in 2010, the name was refined to the Valley Industry Association of Santa Clarita.

Business Leaders Spoke; VIA Listened

In 1995, VIA sponsored its first CEO Forum, bringing together chief executives, community leaders and educators to discuss the business community’s training needs and workforce plans.

At that gathering, CEOs emphasized the need to re-engineer and re-tool the local workforce if they were to successfully diversify, from defense to commercial manufacturing, and expand to new markets.

In response, VIA and College of the Canyons Employee Training Institute began working together to fund a “retraining” initiative in the SCV. An Employment Training Panel project was developed and the partnership provided nearly $3 million in training funds to support skill upgrade training to more than 13,000 employees in the SCV.

In 1999, a similar group met to focus on key skills for success in the rapidly changing economy. The forum identified communication, problem-solving and team skills as the top priorities.

As a result, VIA developed the VIA Website Contest, an annual competition that ran for five years for kindergarten through 12th grade students. Students worked with a local company partner to build websites for the partner, many of which were adopted and incorporated by SCV businesses.

VIA’s third CEO Forum was held in 2002, which discussed an overwhelming need for entry level employees to have basic business conduct skills and for students entering the workforce to be better equipped with fundamental skills and work ethics.

VIA set out to build a program based on curriculum provided by Junior Achievement, which resulted in VIA’s signature education program, Connecting to Success. In 2002, Connecting to Success trained 500 high school juniors and last year the program trained as many as 2,000 local high school students.

Local business indicated at the 2004 CEO Forum a clear goal to develop outreach to our adjacent counties, which resulted in the creation of a tri-county Regional Executive Summit with special focuses on workforce housing and mobility. Through economic challenges, the Summit evolved into the subsequent return of the VIA B2B Industry Show, which remains Santa Clarita’s largest business-to-business industry show.
