VIA Elections Underway

The nominating committee for VIA’s 2012 board of directors met in August to create a preliminary slate of nominees for the upcoming board election. VIA’s bylaws require a committee comprised of three board members and three at-large members of the organization.

The committee, chaired by Randy Moberg of LBW Insurance & Financial Services and VIA’s immediate-past president, included incoming VIA Chairwoman of the Board for 2012 Diana Meyer of Meyer Marketing Intelligence, and fellow board members Laura Biery from the city of Santa Clarita and Joe Klocko from the College of the Canyons CACT Center. Also serving were VIA members Jill Mellady of Mellady Direct Marketing, Steve Dole of SD Creative Services and Patti Handy of Mission Valley Bank.

Once completed, the slate will be presented to the board of directors for discussion and approval. After the board approves, ballots will be circulated in October among VIA members. Election results will be announced at the VIA business luncheon meeting in November along with installation for the newly elected board.

According to the organization’s bylaws, the board is built on a sliding scale of 15 to 21 members. The size of the board is reviewed annually, and increased or reduced based on the needs of the organization and determined by majority vote. VIA currently has 15 board members. Due to organizational growth in 2011 and expected improvements in the economy, the existing board may choose to increase its size for 2012.

Each year, one-third of the organization’s directors are up for election. When identifying potential board members, the nominating committee measures candidates’ qualifications in terms of established criteria. The committee looks for diversity among industries and the type of position candidates hold in their organizations.

VIA strives to achieve complete skill sets on the board to ensure members are able to bring skills in the areas of finance, organization, operations, marketing and fundraising, among others.

The nominating committee also looks for a candidate’s willingness to oversee committees and the ability to contribute to VIA with resources, either financially or by helping grow the member base.

Once seated, the new board will begin the planning process for 2012 with a strategic planning session the first week of December. VIA’s planning sessions involve a year in review analysis, touching on all programs and events with a critical evaluation of their relevance to the membership and associated success levels achieved. Attention then turns to planning and goal setting for the next two to three years. Executive officers will also be appointed at that meeting.

“We’re looking forward to continuing our tradition of forward-thinking, future-focused planning that creates great energy for our organization and guides our efforts over the next several years,” said VIA CEO/President Kathy Norris.

VIA formally installs its 2012 board of directors at the November business luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 15, starting at 11:45 a.m. at the Valencia Country Club.
