Egg Plantation wins environmental award

The Egg Plantation in Old Town Newhall has been recognized for outstanding environmental business practices by the California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery.

The Santa Clarita restaurant was one of the winners of the Waste Reduction Awards Program for its dedication to environmental sustainability.

Winners receive WRAP certificates and window decals alerting customers to the business’ environmentally friendly practices.

Egg Plantation promotes green practices by recycling used oil and food waste, conserving water and energy and using non-toxic cleaning products.

The eatery also helps conserve water by serving complimentary water to customers only upon request, saving approximately $1,000 a year.

Egg Plantation has green flooring, low-flush toilets, decomposable to-go containers and uniforms made of recyclable materials. 

“As a business owner, I feel a real sense of community in Old Town New-hall,” Shannon Mee, co-owner of Egg Plantation, said. “The community has given back to us, and we wanted to give back to the community through green business practices. 

At the end of the day, our environmental efforts help make Santa Clarita a better place to live.”

In January 2010, the breakfast and lunch spot also achieved 2-Star Certified Green Restaurant status from the Green Restaurant Association for its Earth-friendly practices.

“The city of Santa Clarita is honored to have a local business awarded for its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability in our community,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “Egg Plantation exemplifies how other businesses can implement methods of reducing and recycling waste.”

The combined green efforts of businesses throughout California help reduce millions of tons of waste produced by the commercial sector each year.
