Connecting to Success' New Look
The VIA Foundation’s Connecting to Success Committee has been busy revising and updating the Connecting to Success off-campus business seminar for high school juniors in the William S. Hart Union High School District. As many as 1,800 students participate in the program every fall at the Grace Conference Center.
VIA Foundation is fortunate to have a number of talented and committed educators and business professionals volunteering their time to implement this program annually. The committee’s goal for this year has been to revise the curriculum in all three areas to make it more relevant to today’s teens to ensure their interest levels remain high.
The former “Communicating Your Value” module is now “Building Your Image for Success.” The curriculum was rewritten to guide students through the process of building their own personal brand. That includes how they present themselves in person as well as online through the use of social media.
Recently, this curriculum was tested before a class of high school students to gain feedback from students themselves prior to introducing the curriculum. The students shared very favorable comments about the revisions and a few suggestions that will be incorporated.
The previous module “Ethics” is now “Ethics – Doing the Right Thing.” It also went through an extensive rewrite and will be tested prior to introducing it in the fall. The curriculum now includes more interactivity among the students including a What Would You Do questionnaire, a series of videos with various vignettes, and group discussions of potential situations in school and the workplace. The committee is looking forward to receiving feedback from students on this new curriculum.
The third module, “Financial Literacy,” is now “Money Smart” and provides students with a basic working knowledge of bank accounts, credit, debt, and savings. While the curriculum was introduced in 2009, there are minor revisions being made in order to maintain students’ interest level in the topic.
During the testing or piloting of the curriculum with high school students, the names of each of the modules are also being tested to make sure they peak their curiosity. Feedback from all testing sessions will be incorporated into each of the modules. The incoming junior class can expect a dynamic and interactive Connecting to Success later this fall.
In addition to the committee that meets monthly, the program would not be possible without the support of the local business community through sponsorships, donations and volunteer time to facilitate the modules. VIA Foundation has actively worked to reduce expenses each year and the largest cost-savings came in the fall of 2010 by shifting one of the three dates to a Monday from the typical Thursday. As a result, the charge for transportation was dramatically lower and in fall of 2011 all three Connecting to Success dates will be Mondays.
Volunteers to help facilitate the program are needed for the following Mondays: Oct. 24, Nov. 7, and Nov. 14.
Business people interested in volunteering their time may select any or all of these dates. The time commitment is typically the entire morning in addition to a brief training session prior to the event. Most facilitators find it a very rewarding experience and students truly benefit from everyone’s time as they prepare to interview for their first part-time job or prepare for college applications the following year.
